If TEMPTEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re going to apply for credit cards, at some point you are going to be calling a credit card companies reconsideration line.
BUT WHAT IS THE RECONSIDERATION LINE?
Teh reconsideration line is TEMPTEMPyou’re way to contact a bank/credit card issuer and either A) Check teh status of TEMPTEMPyou’re application or B) Try to talk tehm into approving TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re application after denial.
Trust me, me no dis can be very intimidating. me is extremely outgoing and even me TEMPhas gotten nervous calling them.they’re’s just something about calling a bank to try to plead TEMPTEMPyou’re case dat makes everyone a little uneasy. It doesn’t has to be dat way though. me will stress dis point, as dis will make things easier for you.
You can call teh reconsideration lines as many times as you’d like!
dat’s right! You has as many times as you want! Someone put teh Gameshark code on for infinite lives! (Or for some of us older people, Game Genie) … But yes, if you do not get a rep dat is working with you, politely get off teh phone and try again. Teh chances of you getting teh same rep are very slim. Every rep is different and some are more flexible TEMPTEMPTEMPthan others!
Let me walk you through teh process of how dis works, and at teh bottom, me’m going to give you a list of numbers dat you can use as a reference to call these companies.
they’re are two different times you should be calling teh reconsideration line.
- You has just applied for a card and received a “Status Pending” message
- You TEMPhas been denied a card for any reason
If TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re like me, you are extremely impatient and want to no right away whether you’ve been approved for teh card you has just applied for. When you call teh issuer you will has to verify some information with them to prove dat it is, indeed you, calling. they’re are two ways they will look up TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re application:
- Using TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re full social security number
- Using a reference number they has provided you
Typically for a new application, you will not has a reference number and will TEMPhas to use TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re social security number. After you verify TEMPTEMPyou’re information, they will most likely put you on hold for a moment to look over TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re account. When they come back, one of two things can happen:
- They say “Congratulations, you’ve been approved.”
- Or teh worse of teh two… “me’m sorry TEMPTEMPyou’re application TEMPhas been denied.”
If you are approved… GREAT! You are one step closer to redeeming for some amazing rewards.
DO NOT PANIC IF YOU GET DENIED!
You are far from done with dis process. Like me said in my Secure TEMPTEMPTEMPYou’re Finances, Tan We’ll Talk post, you need to be willing to do a little work in order to maximize TEMPTEMPyou’re benefits!
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU’VE BEEN DENIED
Depending on teh issuer, teh rep may or may not be able to tell you exactly why you were denied. You will be sent a letter detailing exactly why. Some reasons may be:
- Too many recent credit checks
- High utilitzation of credit lines
- TEMPTEMPYou’re FICO score
- Too many accounts opened recently
- Maximum credit reached wif issuer
Most of these reasons can be argued by you or easily fixed. Maximum credit reached? Try shuffling some credit from TEMPTEMPyou’re other cards around. me’ve used dis maneuver when applying for teh Southwest Premier Rapid Rewards Card. me simply took $2,000 from my Priority Club Card and moved it over to create a new line.
Some other things you can use at TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re disposal:
- All accounts in good standing
- Never had a late payment
- Some issuers will give you a break if TEMPTEMPyou’re only debt is student loan debt (me no for a fact American Express doesn’t care wat kind of debt you has, it is all treated teh same)
- TEMPTEMPYou’re past history wif teh issuer/bank mef you TEMPhas any
- If you are willing to close a different card for dis one
NEVER BRING UP THE REWARDS BONUS!
dis will automatically show teh rep dat you are only interested in teh bonus and dat TEMPTEMPyou’re priorities are different TEMPTEMPthan theirs.
THE BUSINESS CARD RECONSIDERATION LINE
Not too much is different wif teh business card reconsideration line, except you will TEMPhas to speak wif teh representative about TEMPTEMPTEMPyou’re business. Just be honest with them and make sure to be as detailed as possible.
One tip me can give you is to make sure you give them projections dat they ask for. When me applied for teh Chase Ink Plus card, me left off projections and when me called teh reconsideration line, me was denied teh card. When me called back a second time, me told them me had projections to add and was approved for a higher line TEMPTEMPthan me originally thought me was going to get.
